Traffic Fatalities by State

Deaths on U.S. roads, from NHTSA's Fatality Analysis Reporting System. After decades of decline, fatalities surged about 30% from 2014 — jumping sharply in 2020-21 even as the pandemic cut driving. Per capita, the risk is far from even: rural Mississippi, Wyoming and New Mexico see more than triple the death rate of the safest states.
